The Intersection of Service Provider Wellbeing and Equity in Healthcare and Social Services: A Lived Experience Study in Systems Transformation

In 2021, Vancouver Foundation funded a Develop Grant for a research project conducted by Bridge for Health and the Public Health Association of BC to explore the lived experience of service providers in healthcare and social services with a view toward systems transformation. The Intersection of Service Provider, Wellbeing and Equity in Healthcare and Social Services Systems Transformation project involved gathering insights from direct service providers with regard to their lived experience as it relates to wellness and equity in their workplace.

The results met with many of our expectations in terms of the pervasive nature of burnout, exhaustion, disillusionment, and the lack of capacity for sensitive conversations related to equity, as well as the need for overall organizational cultural transformation. There were several responses sparking imagination regarding how we might approach this age-old challenge in innovative and creative ways. This session will explore the study results, insights, and recommendations for moving forward.

Key Points Of This Session

  • Explore the connection between wellness and equity in the workplace
  • Examine the lived experience of service providers in healthcare and social services what it means to be well with an emphasis on the experience of joy and fulfillment
  • Identify strategies that support service providers and organizations to engage in sensitive conversations related to equity, privilege, oppression, and marginalization to support overall wellness in the workplace and personally
