Biography

Makeba T. Green is an Associate Professor and Chair of the Department of Social Work at, Bowie State University and a proud alumnus.  A lover of HBCU education (Historically Black Colleges and Universities), Dr. Green received her Ph.D. from the School of Social Work at Clark Atlanta University, (Atlanta, GA), Master’s of Social Work (MSW) from Howard University (Washington, DC) and a Bachelor’s of Social Work (BSW) from Bowie State University (Bowie, MD).

A seasoned pedagogue, researcher, and clinician, Dr. Green has taught courses across the curriculum for 17 years, directed the undergraduate field placement program, and provided case management to families with children at risk of out-of-home placement. With a sincere dedication to Social Work and best practices in mental health; Dr. Green consistently provided direct service to the female addiction population. Notably, Dr. Green’s research in study abroad opportunities for underserved populations continues to evolve, as her most recent work explores the impact of study abroad programs has on undergraduate students attending HBCU’s and minority-serving institutions.

Ever the community activist and social justice maven, Dr. Green is Co-Founder of GirlsBELIEVE, a full-day conference for girls ages 13-18 offering workshops, plenaries, entertainment, and prizes aimed at providing strategies to assist girls on the journey to womanhood and higher education.  Dr. Green also serves as an advisor for Goaldiggers. The Sankofa Project whose mission is; to connect inner-city teen girls of African descent to education and gain college access; by introducing them to the study of their ancestry and ethnic identity reinforcing a positive self-concept. Dr. Green was most recently elected to the Council on Social Work Education’s Board of Directors where she will have an opportunity to effect change on the BSW level of Social Work Education. An endearing wife and mom, relentless, clinician, researcher, educator, practitioner, and advocate, Dr. Makeba Green is determined to sow seeds of change.
